How easy is it for a valve stem on a tire to break? What is involved in fixing this and is it costly?

We had brand new tires put on three weeks ago and we got home from out of town a couple days ago and had a flat tire. We had it looked at and they said that the valve stem is broken so it won’t hold any air. The guy that looked at it said that he is 80-90% sure that it happened when the new tires were installed on the vehicle. The guys who we bought the tires from and who installed them were real jerks to us and did not provide very good customer service. My husband didn’t take their crap and said some things back to them. So I was wondering if they couldn’t have done it on purpose or if valve stems tend to break easily.
